About the project

A study on the reality of innovation in Portugal.

Beyond innovation networks

The project “Beyond innovation networks: Portugal” (InovNet Portugal) studies the networks that are formed by different actors (i.e. firms, public organizations, other organizations or even individuals) to jointly develop innovation processes. The empirical setting of the study is the Portuguese organizational context. Based on qualitative and quantitative methods, we expect to contribute to a better understanding of the innovation reality in Portugal and to make proposals that inform national development policies.

This research project aims to understand the relationship between two distinct modes of innovation (i.e. the science, technology, and innovation mode and the doing, using, and interacting mode) and the social networks where the innovation process takes place. Furthermore, it is our intent to collect and analyse data from innovation networks in Portugal in order to contribute to the scarce knowledge about innovation in the Portuguese economy.

Know the research phases

The expected outcome is a set of recommendations for national innovation policies, particularly for the Portuguese case.
  • 1

    Phase one

It is intended to propose conceptual models for the agency and structure of innovation networks based on extensive literature review. These conceptual models will support the following stage of the research.

  • 2

    Phase two

The second stage aims to assemble empirical models for the agency and structure of innovation networks through qualitative methods.

  • 3

    Phase three

Finally, the empirical models from the second stage will be tested in the third stage of the research through quantitative methods.
